As a grass-fed operation, finding a non-grain treat for our bison was almost impossible. When our local feed dealer, Berry Family Farm, suggested we try Chaffhaye it was a complete game-changer.
Handling bison can be quite challenging. You can get a bison to do anything if IT wants to do it. Feeding Chaffhaye helps them want to do what we are asking. They can be out in our farthest pasture, but when we bring out the Chaffhaye they come running. It’s an integral tool in our low-stress handling system and I really love that it’s a healthy treat and beneficial supplement for our herd.
In 2021 we had a calf born with a condition called “Parrot Mouth.” This prevented nursing from her mother, so we undertook the challenge of bottle-feeding her. When it was time to introduce grass/hay to her for the health of her rumen, we weren’t sure if she would be able to eat. So we decided to try Chafhaye since it's easy to chew and has an appealing sweet smell. She was gobbling it up in no time. Needless to say, Chaffhaye has been an important part of her diet ever since. She is currently thriving and on par with all the other yearlings in our herd.
