Chaffhaye Alfalfa

For All Classes of Equine

Chaffhaye is a fresh chopped, premium bagged forage sold in 1.5, 5 & 50-pound bags that captures the key characteristics of fresh pasture while also offering a guaranteed level of nutrition.

Most animal feeds go through a drying process that removes a majority of the naturally occurring plant juice from the forage. This essentially drains life from the feed. We process Chaffhaye to retain its natural plant juice, preserving the natural probiotics of the feed. By retaining the plant juice, Chaffhaye becomes the closest product you can buy to fresh, natural pasture. Hence, we call it “Premium Pasture in a Bag.”

Horses are grazers and in their natural state would spend a large portion of their day feeding on a small-and-frequent basis. The horse’s digestive system reflects this natural behavior and is designed to acquire the majority of its nutritional needs from forage. This is why high-quality forage is the foundation of the horse’s diet. But as a horse owner, you may find it challenging to find clean, good-quality forage on a consistent basis that is so important to your horse’s diet. Chaffhaye is a superior alternative to baled hays and processed feed that allows you to take care of your horse the way nature intended.

There are unique biological aspects to Chaffhaye that exert health and physiological benefits beyond the nutrition of the forage itself. Chaffhaye undergoes an all natural fermentation process in the package that enlivens it with yeast, enzymes, and beneficial microflora.

Chaffhaye’s beneficial microflora, or fiber-digesting bacteria, closely resembles those found in the early fiber-digestion process in the rumen of ruminants. In essence, Chaffhaye “predigests” the forage in the bag. Once consumed, more of its nutrients can be assimilated (absorbed ) in the body, leading to greater nutritional benefit.

    16 Month Shelf Life

Unopened, we guarantee Chaffhaye for 16-months from the date of manufacture, with no loss in nutritional value

  • icon
    Zero Waste

Soft and palatable, animals normally eat 100% of Chaffhaye fed. As a “pre-digested” forage, animals can assimilate more of its energy and vital nutrients. Animals on Chaffhaye produce up to 50% less manure, reducing fly populations and barnyard cleanup time.

    No Barn Required

In it’s airtight, weatherproof packaging, Chaffhaye can be stored inside or out. No barn required!

    Blister Beetle Free

Even though blister beetles are not indigenous to our growing region, we regularly monitor our fields to prevent blister beetle infestation. We have never had an incidence of blister beetles in our forage.

    Probiotic Forage

Beneficial bacteria and yeast cultures for optimum digestive health

    Low Sugar & Starch

The natural fermentation reduces the levels of sugars and starches making Chaffhaye a safe choice for insulin resistant, laminitic or obese horses.

Reduces Risk of Choke & Impaction

Chaffhaye’s chop-length and moisture content are designed to mimic your animals bite in the pasture. Chaffhaye eliminates the risk of choke and impaction that are common with dry hay and cubes.

    Dust and Mold Spore Free

As a naturally moist feed, Chaffhaye minimizes respiratory ailments in animals sensitive to dust or airborne mold spores

How an animal’s digestive system utilizes a given feed is termed their “biological response.” Studies involving horses have shown a significantly higher biological response to fermented products like Chaffhaye. A higher biological response means your horse is getting more nutrients out of their forage.

In recent studies, horses fed Alfalfa haylages such as Chaffhaye were shown to increase digestion of the forage in comparison to those fed dry forage.Digestibility was shown to increase as follows:

% Increase Crude Protein
% Increase Dry Matter
% Increase Crude Fiber

This significant increase in bio availability can be attributed to the fermentation process (inside the bag) that essentially mimics the horse’s cecum “unlocking” the nutrients to be absorbed in the small intestine. In the case of baled hay or cubes/pellets, the forage must pass through the small intestine, the most efficient organ for nutrient absorption nearly untouched.

When Changing Feed

Chaffhaye is designed to meet the forage portion of your horse’s diet. Depending on such factors as age, breed, workload, available pasture, and whether you are feeding Chaffhaye Alfalfa solely or in conjunction with another forage and/or grain, an energy and/or vitamin and mineral supplement may be needed. Consult a Chaffhaye representative or your animal nutritionist for further information.

After observing your animal for a period of time on Chaffhaye, you may want to increase or decrease by up to 10% to obtain the desired overall body condition and appearance. Feed changes should be made gradually over a period of 7 to 14 days.

Changes in the rate of feeding should not exceed 2 pounds per day.

How to store an open bag

Once opened, Chaffhaye acts like any fresh product. By opening the bag, the forage becomes exposed to oxygen and begins to lose its freshness. As a guide, Chaffhaye will remain fresh for 7 to 14 days, depending on weather conditions. For this reason, an opened bag should be stored out of the sun and re-closed to prolong freshness. Follow these 3 steps to ensure your Chaffhaye stays as fresh as possible.

Step 1
Open the bag

Use a knife or box opener to cut along the top seam of the bag.

Step 2
Roll the top back down

After removing the serving, roll the top back down and press out all the air. DO NOT TRANSFER PRODUCT INTO CONTAINER- this will reintroduce oxygen and shorten the shelf life.

Step 3
Tape the top down

Or place a heavy object keep rolled down. Set in cool place. If storing for longer than one week, you may remove product to place in individual freezer bags and freeze to keep fresh.

The Best Method

The Chaffhaye bag is specifically engineered to extend the forage’s shelf-life. For that reason, we recommend always storing your Chaffhaye  inside the original bag. For best results, do not place inside containers as this can heat the product.
